A change in personality after surgery

Postby Beckyw » Wed Feb 25, 2015 12:12 pm

Hi all,
I feel a bit daft writing this but I don't know where to start with getting some advice. I'm not even sure if it's the right place tbh!
My husband has tof and had a pulmonary valve replacement in October. The surgery did not go smoothly and his heart stopped twice for nearly 5 mins each time. The doctors dropped his body temperature to save any brain damage. He spent three days in a coma but was back home 16 days after the op.
Since he's come home he's been very sullen and sulky, very morbid, telling our 8 and 6 year olds that he won't be around in ten years. He's very unhappy in his job but when I try and talk to him about it, he says he doesn't know why he should change jobs as there's no guarantees he'll live all that long! He does sweet f.a around the house anymore because "he's recovering from surgery" his parenting ethos has changed and so has his respect for money
If I try and talk to him about it I'm accused of being unsympathetic or that I've changed since his operation.
I guess I'm just looking for someone to say to me "I've had an experience like that" or "that's not right (which I think I know in my heart of hearts) how long do feelings like this last? How do I turn to for help? Is it the gp?
Any advice much appreciated!

Hi Becky, were there any GUCH specialist nurses at the hospital where your husband had his operation? If so they would be a good place to start. Some people have a temporary personality change after being on a heart lung machine, it is called 'pump head' see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postperfusion_syndrome

Hi becky, I had a pulmonary valve replaced 14 years ago and I felt quiet similar to your hubby and went to see my GP he said I had post traumatic stress syndrome ( which is quiet common after major surgery) and suggested I went for councling which I did for 3 months and it really helped me I know it's not for everyone but it might be worth talking to your GP .
